Are you tired of constantly cleaning your eyeglasses throughout the day? Just like any other relationship, taking care of your glasses is essential for their longevity!
Cleaning your eyeglasses is a daily task, but sometimes our habits may not be as effective as we think. To ensure crystal-clear vision all day long, we present a comprehensive five-step guide on how to properly clean your glasses.
- Begin by washing your hands Remember what your parents used to say before dinner? Well, the same principle applies to cleaning your glasses. Start your cleaning ritual by washing your hands thoroughly. Use cool or warm water with a small amount of mild dishwashing liquid or hand soap.
Make sure the tap water is lukewarm to prevent damage to the lens coating or warping. If the water is too hot for a newborn, it’s too hot for your glasses!
- Rinse your glasses While rinsing your hands, take your glasses and gently rinse them under a stream of water. Apply a tiny amount of mild dishwashing liquid to both sides of each lens. Rub both sides for about a minute, and don’t forget to clean the frame, including the nose pads!
The area where the lenses meet the bridge of the frame, known as the nasal edge, tends to accumulate sweat and oil. Pay extra attention to cleaning this part. Here are some additional tips:
For metal frames with nose pads, give attention to the arms of the nose pads and the pads themselves.
For plastic frames without nose pads, clean the portion of the bridge that touches your nose to remove built-up oil and sweat.
Thoroughly rinse the glasses under the faucet.
Avoid using soap or soaking/rinsing if you have anti-fog lenses, as it may reduce their effectiveness. Instead, wipe them daily with a microfiber cloth and clean them weekly.
Clean the front and back of the lenses separately by:
Blowing gently to remove any dust or debris.
Dampening a portion of a microfiber cloth with lukewarm water (not hot!).
Using the damp section of the cloth to gently clean one side of the lens, and then the other. Finally, dry the lenses using the dry part of the microfiber cloth.

- Dry your glasses with a clean cloth Remove excess water from the lenses and frame by patting them dry. Use a dedicated microfiber cloth or a clean cotton towel that hasn’t been exposed to fabric softener or dryer sheets. Ensure there are no debris particles that could scratch your lenses.
You may notice small amounts of water coming out of the hinges or the groove between the frame and lens. Don’t worry; you can dab it off with your lens cloth. The lenses might even produce a “squeaking” sound within the frames for a few hours until all remaining traces of water evaporate.
- Clean your lenses After patting them dry, give your lenses a final touch using the microfiber cloth. You can slightly moisten the cloth with a commercially available lens cleaner labeled “safe for coated lenses,” or simply breathe onto each lens and wipe gently. Remember not to clean dry lenses to avoid dragging dirt or debris across the surface.
- Expert tips for maintaining clean glasses To keep your glasses clean, here are some tips from our experts:
Keep anti-fog lenses away from soap, running water, and harsh chemicals like acetone. Store them in a cool, dry place, such as your glasses case, when not in use.
Always store your glasses in their case when not wearing them. Most dirt accumulates when glasses are worn on the head.
Clean your glasses when they are wet, as cleaning dry lenses increases the risk of smearing oil and dragging debris.
Avoid using anything containing alcohol, as it can damage both the lenses and certain
